Embedding Video on a Wordpress Blog
In this episode of "Ask Dan- The Free IQ Guy", Barnaby asked:
Question:
"Hi
I love freeIQ - and thanks for your web site
I would love to embed freeIQ into my wordpress posts, but sadly wordpress does not allow Javascript.
It's easy to put youtube into them, but not freeIQ
Any ideas on how this could be possible?
And, with an embedded freeIQ video, if someone just say watches it, then types freeiq.com in the address bar, are they recognized as an affiliate referral? Does just watching the video from a site acknowledge where they have come from?
many thanks again
Barnaby"

Barnaby:
You are correct, Wordpress does not allow Javascript in the body of a post. How I solved the problem on my site was to put the code in a plug-in called an Ad Unit. The plug in is available at Semiologic who provides templates, layouts, skins for different color schemes, etc. This entire FreeIQTips.com blog is built on WordPressProTemplates.com. Dennis Bernardy the developer does a great job of including all the great plug-in's that you might need - but only after he's thoroughly tested them. He also watches the WordPress releases very carefully and tells you when it's safe to upgrade your WordPress installation.
By the way, for anyone brand new to Wordpress, you can check out Sherman Hu's video tutorials to blog with Wordpress.
Ok, back to embedding a video. My first step is to create an "ad unit" for each video and cut and past the appropriate embed code from FreeIQ into it. These ad units were initially designed with the intent of putting AdSense Ads on your blog. But since you can put Javascript into the Ad Units, it works great for the embedded Video too. Once I have created the Ad Unit, I then simply insert the ad unit into my post or page. Once I publish the post, it works great.
Click the Play Button in the player below to watch me actually go through this process to add the below video to MY WordPress Blog. Pretty cool, huh?
Besides the fact that you just watched a FreeIQ Hosted video in a WordPress blog, you can see even more examples of it all working in all my tutorial video's. Watch a few and you'll see what I'm talking about. There's even a autoplay=false or true flag in the code that is NOW working. So YOU get to decide if the video automatically starts playing.
I am told by FreeIQ that anytime someone even WATCHES a video embedded on your website, that the user is cookied and you get credit. I'm not quite sure how that works and I haven't tested it yet. So, I can't say for sure if that feature is currently working or in the planning stages. Until it is tested more thoroughly, what I recommend is to make sure that after your video, you have your affiliate links pointing to FreeIQ and encourage people to go sign up for an account through your affiliate link. Or, you can employ the Direct publishing feature so anytime anyone leaves your site and goes to FreeIQ through ANY link (affiliate link or not), you get credit.
Watch a great video of the Direct Publishing at: FreeIQ Tips Direct Publishing Tutorial.
I also answered a question on this at: Ask Dan about Direct Publishing
Hope this helps!
Thanks!

Gang: Let me point out that there may be free plug-in's available that will allow you to embed the video code. My suggestion above is simply because: 1. That's what I'm using. 2. The Semiologic Pro Theme is really a very comprehensive blogging tool that will allow you to get professional designs without having to hire a programmer. But you certainly don't need to buy the pro theme. Search and you should be able to find a free plug-in. If I find one that looks good, I'll let you know.

[…] Hello Dan, Thank you for sharing the info on embedding videos in our WP blog. ( previous post is here ) However, I am a little confused. Do we have to buy Semiologic theme for $295 to be able to […]
Gang:
If you want to find out how to get a FREE plug-in that allows you to embed a FreeIQ video into your wordpress blog, go here: http://freeiqtips.com/67/embed-freeiq-video-part-two/

While this does technically work, it's not really a perfect solution. As you can see on this site (as well as my own site) the thumbnails don't appear when the page loads.
Also, the status bar shows "Loading…" until you interact with the control. If a person waits for the "Loading…" to go away, then they may think the video is broken and move on.
Hopefully the FreeIQ team is aware of the issue and is working on a solution.

Roger:
You are correct, this IS a problem. Fortunately, Brad Fallon and the gang at FreeIQ are aware of it. Here is his response as posted in a StomerNet forum.
"This is a known issue — when a video loads on a blog without autoplay, it says "loading" until it plays. The new player version we're working will fix this as well as add some really cool new features.
Brad"
My recommendation, perhaps put a little prompt on top of the video player that says "Click the play button to start watching now." Not pretty, but might help the user experience until FreeIQ finishes their new player.
